Digital Ark: St. Florence, Wales: Frequently Asked Questions original

Frequently Asked Questions    Last Update: 2026-09-04

Why isn't this site owned by someone official?

That is okay by me!

I do not expect to live forever.

At some point it might be nice if an official St. Florence committee/local office/.. took over the site.

Currently the web-site is a sub-set of my ripetech.com site which was originally dedicated to my interests, mainly computing.

Ideally somebody should arrange a more relevant name for the website and host it as a free-standing site.

Maybe in a few weeks, if there is interest enough, someone could contact the St. Florence village committee (if one exists).

Does this site only cover St. Florence?

Yes. But is reaches out to the homes and farms that consider themselves part of St. Florence.

Why does it stop covering St. Florence in the 1980's onwards?

Basically the village underwent major changes from the 1970's onwards.

Change happens.
We can not stop it. But I (George Salisbury) am no longer part of the later community and do not trust myself to document the village from the mid-1970s onwards.

Can anyone provide input to the site?

Yes! Providing that they are true to the goal pictures, memories and anecdotes relating to St. Florence pre-1980's.
Get pictures, memories and anecdotes to me, and I will see if/what I can incorporate in to the site.

Currently the preferred means of submission is by e-mail. I am working on submission by WhatsApp.

Are there limits to what can be input to the site?

Yes! No advertising. No detailed account of some event.

But, let us say that you are a collector of St. Florence grave stone engravings, and are looking for a way to get your images online, then no. Get your own web site.

No content that is copy-righted without express permission of the owners

I have not thought about hosting videos or sound recordings!

I suspect that I am doing some form of censorship. But not too sure what sort!

Is there some commercial aspect of this site?

No. I will not use any input for commercial purposes!!!

Is there some commercial aspect of this site?

No. I will not use any input for commercial purposes!!!

Are there any technical constraints on submissions?

Text: plain text (UTF-8 preferred). A Microsoft Word .doc or docx is okay.
Pictures: JPG, GIF, even HEIC (but I will have to convert it to JPG, which is a small pain)

What picture resolution should you use?

Basically the higher the better!
A modern Smartphone image is usually more than adequate.
BUT if you are taking a snapshot of a paper document please please please check that the lighting is good, and the image is well focused.

Can you develop a new page for the site?

Yes.

I have built this site so you could run the entire site, or even just one page of it, on your own computer without needing a host server!

This is part of the reason that I have opted for a HTML/CSS only solution with no extra host server processing.

So you could develop your own page on a PC (Windows of Linux) and see how it would look if it were on line.
To get you going you only need 2 files, and one of those does not need editing if your page looks like the ones on this site.

It is not rocket science, but is admittedly a bit nerdy

Techie Talk the site uses only HTML and CSS. No server side processing e.g. PHP, Java script,...
