Create - with ISBN

If you have books with ISBN numbers, most have nowadays, then you have a choice of how to populate the book in the database.

  • Create a default (empty) entry for a given ISBN number, and populate it by hand (refer to the page Create - No ISBN)

or

  • Access a Web site that takes an ISBN and returns some information relating to the referenced book.

The default setting for this program is that you provide the information by hand.

You can change the option via the menu option File > Auto access Web

For the purposes of this help page, I have assumed that this option has been selected.

For demonstration purposes I am going to use the ISBN for a book that I have used since the late 1980s as my reference on how to progam in C.

The book has two ISBN numbers:

  • ISBN13 9780131103627
  • ISBN10 0131103628

If you have a barcode reader, then place the mouse/cursor in the white field with the text enter ISBNs here, remove the text in the field, and enter the barcode. The program will happily ignore any extra space or minus characters, but it demands that the ISBN is either 10 or 13 numerals, oh the last character can be a X.

Once you have input the ISBN, either by hand or using a barcode scanner, then press the enter key.

The access to the Web site can take a few seconds. The white field will be colour coded to show the Web access status.

The coding is:

Invalid input: - red

ISBN number being checked via the Web access, default row inserted: - light purple

ISBN number check complete: - light green

Once the ISBN input has been handled, it will be copied to the area below the create empty row. This is just for reference, so you know what was the last processed value.

The following screenshot shows the display after the input of the ISBN 9780131103627, under the following conditions:

  • the menu option  Options > Auto access Web is active
  • the edit sub-window has been enabled.      (Clicking the edit button shown here in pink!)

Please note: the Web site used by this application is www.ISBNSearch.org I have no association with the Web site or the domain holder, except in so far as I occasionally use the Web site to obtain information about an ISBN number.

Further: the screen shot presented here shows an extract of the returned information.

You can invoke the edit mode and modify the entry if you wish.
